The kind of Son the Father truly wants

Okay, so we’ll bring our story to finish in this part of this post series. In the first part, we saw how Tom would say No to his father’s request. We saw that he always gave an excuse for not obeying the father’s instructions. Dave, on the other hand, would always quickly say Yes to the Father. Then we saw that despite Dave’s initial willingness and prompt positive response, something always stopped him from obeying. But then we witnessed the repentance of brother Tom and several of us like him have decided to obey God practically.

But was the Father truly happy?

This is the question that has troubled me further as I put myself in the shoes of that father. I’m not a father yet but I was just thinking . . . Which father would love to have 2 children – One always says NO first, though he usually repents and obeys. The other always say YES, but never gets to do it. Do you think the Father will be truly happy with this kind of children? Yeah . . . The job gets done after it all, at least a repentant son would eventually do it but is this the ideal son?

What kind of Son would a Father really want?

A Son like Jesus! One who would not only be ready and willing but will actually go and do it. A son who would promptly say YES and courageously go and DO that which he said yes to. The Father looks for those who will be willing and also would do all he bids them.

It is not enough to say yes, it is not enough to sing songs about obeying God and doing his will, it is not enough to respond to alter calls and even cry at the altar, it is not enough to hear a message and get pricked by it and will to do it, we, especially as disciples must arise to obey God.

The danger is greater for us as disciples!

The ordinary church goer has not made any commitment to obey God. He is just going to church to get whatever he can from God. His response almost all of the time is NO. He always has a reason for not obeying God, he almost never agrees the first time to God’s instructions. These are people who argue with you when you speak about their way of life. They are quick to say ‘Stop judging me’ or ‘Stop looking at my outward appearance’. They look like the old Tom, the standard answer is – No I won’t go!

But we, disciples, have been trained not to say No to God. We have been broken and to say No is extremely difficult. We now know enough to know what God wants from us. Whereas the other guy is going to church to give to ‘God’ so that he can win that next contract, you are going to church expecting that God will speak to you. But then, may we not be like Dave – willing but not Obedient! It is not enough to say yes to God, we must actually stand up to obey God’s instruction.

Many disciples today are willing but not Obedient. Yet, God works in us both to WILL and to DO His good pleasure!

Don’t just SAY yes, DO yes!

So dear brother, don’t be sluggish about that instruction. Beloved sister, don’t delay practical obedience. What is it the Lord has confronted you with? Rise up and do it and do it immediately. Don’t just say yes, do yes. Stop that bad habit, come out from that sinful relationship, go and take that other job God has been speaking about, go and preach to that classmate or friend of yours. Gather those children in your neighbourhood, invite those ladies for a dinner in your home, buy that gift for that struggling brother or sister or family… Don’t just say Yes, stand up and do it immediately!

“Hmm… It’s not easy!”

While I know this and I am not speaking because I have always obeyed every of God’s instructions, this is one statement I am learning not to say often, otherwise I will never obey God at all. Whether obedience for you means – stopping a wrong habit or it means taking a step for God, there is a provision of help available for us… We only need to use that provision.

Titus 2:11  For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men.
12  It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age,

Philippians 2:13  For God is at work within you, helping you want to obey him, and then helping you do what he wants.

Receive Grace and courage today to Obey God.
